👣 The Legend of Big Foot Goa
The name "Big Foot Goa" comes from one of the most fascinating legends preserved in Goan folklore. According to local tradition, the sacred footprint belongs to Mahadar, a kind and generous farmer who was respected for his honesty, humility, and willingness to help others.
It is believed that Mahadar donated much of his wealth to the poor and the needy. As the story goes, after losing everything through his generosity, he stood on a hot rock on one foot and prayed with complete devotion. Moved by his faith and selflessness, the gods blessed him and took him to heaven, leaving behind a giant footprint on the rock as a symbol of his presence.
Today, this legendary footprint has become the inspiration behind the name Big Foot Goa, reminding visitors of values such as kindness, compassion, and selfless service.
🪨 The Majestic Mirabai Laterite Sculpture
Another remarkable attraction inside Ancestral Goa is the magnificent sculpture of Sant Mirabai, one of India's most celebrated devotees of Lord Krishna. This impressive artwork is entirely different from the Big Foot legend but has become one of the most photographed landmarks within the heritage village.
The sculpture was created by renowned Goan artist Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alvares, the founder of Ancestral Goa. Carved from a single massive laterite rock, the sculpture showcases Mirabai in peaceful devotion and reflects Goa's artistic heritage. It has earned recognition as one of India's largest laterite sculptures dedicated to the saint.
Standing before this masterpiece, I was amazed by the craftsmanship involved in transforming a natural rock into such an expressive work of art. It perfectly combines spirituality, history, and traditional Goan artistry.
